Material variants

Render, larch or brick reads differently at ten metres than at thirty centimetres. Three variants from the same camera make the decision comparable.

In short

Material variants in VEDUTUM are images of the same view with only the material changed, so a facade decision can be made on comparable pictures. A fair comparison keeps camera, sun position and surroundings fixed. Three variants are the practical number: with two there is no reference, from five on the order of presentation decides more than the material. Frame colour belongs in the comparison, because facade, frames and roof work as one.

Example: 30 seconds at 25 frames per second are 750 frames. The colour bar shows the daylight of a day-to-night animation.

Key facts

  • Number

Three variants are the practical number for a decision.

  • Fixed

Camera, time of day, surroundings and crop stay identical across all variants.

  • Frames

Frame colour belongs in the comparison because facade, frames and roof work as one.

  • Limit

The picture decides direction and effect, while the physical sample stays decisive for execution.

  • Cost

Each variant is one image, priced in points: one in HD, four in 2K and eight in 4K.

How do you compare facade materials fairly?

  • One camera

Fix the viewpoint before the first variant.

  • One time of day

Afternoon light shows materiality best; what matters is that all variants share it.

  • Same surroundings

One variant with neighbours and one without compares the setting, not the facade.

  • Same crop

No zooming in on the nicer corner.

Which materials and frame colours work together?

White render with anthracite frames reads sharp and modern; the same facade with oak frames reads much softer. Brick with light frames reads traditional, with dark frames urban.

Materiality is decided at three places, not across the surface: the window reveal, the plinth and the parapet. Show a detail crop of those, identical across all variants.

How do you get from a variant to execution?

A picture decides the direction, not the order. Colour stays a matter of the sample, brick a matter of the batch, wood a matter of grade and finish.

For larger projects a sample area of a few square metres, judged in daylight, is still the honest final step.

Frequently asked questions

How many material variants should I show?

Three. With two there is no reference; from five on the sequence decides more than the material.

How much do material variants cost?

Each variant is one image, so one point in HD, four in 2K and eight in 4K. Three variants at the 2K level cost three times four points.

Which materials can I compare?

Render, timber such as larch, brick, frame colours and roofs can be compared, as long as the camera stays fixed.

Are the colours binding?

No. Screens and prints render colour differently. The sample stays decisive for execution; the picture decides effect and surface.

Should the variants show the same surroundings?

Yes. One variant with neighbours and one without compares the setting, not the facade.

Can I compare roofs too?

Yes, and it changes the impression strongly on pitched roofs. Keep the camera fixed while you do.
